NAME: The Doctor
RANK: N/A
ROLE: Chief Medical Officer, USS Voyager NCC 74656
RACE: Sentient holographic being
Voyager is one of the first Starfleet ships to be fitted with the state-of-the-art EMH-1
program. Although now superseded by the EMH-2 program The Doctor can still carry out a
wide range of treatments. Voyager's human Doctor was one of the first victims to die when
Voyager arrived in the Delta quadrant. Because of this, the Doctor is forced to be the
full time medical assistant. The Doctor is technically a combination of holographic light
and energy. The Doctor was only designed to work for a short period of time and in the
sickbay, so the Holo-Emitters which project his image only put into sickbay. Soon however,
Torres modifies the holodeck so he can be transferred there. Here he manages to rescue
Kim, Tuvok and Chakotay from Grendel, a fantasy beast(Heroes and Demons).
The Doctor learns after a while that he must become a fully functioning member of the
crew, and not think of himself as merely the Emergency Medical Hologram. He takes it on
himself to improve his personality subrounties after complaints that he has a poor bedside
manner. This self improvement eventually qualifies himself as a sentient holographic
being. He takes on several improvement routines to better his understanding of humanity,
including infecting himself with a flu (Tattoo) and attempting to add traits of
famous people from the past (The Darkling). The Doctor even falls in love with a
Vidiian woman named Tanara Pel (Lifesigns)
In 2372, Voyager is transported to Earth in the year 1996(Future's End, part II)
Here, a computer designer boss has stolen a Federation time ship from the 29th century. He
uses the Doctor as a hostage and he designs a portable holo-emitter for him. Now the
Doctor can walk anywhere on the ship or beam down on away missions. The Doctor considers
Kes as his best friend and when she leaves in 2374 he 'misses' her a great deal. The
Doctor continues his quest to understand humanity better with the help of the remaining
crew.
